You will be amazed at how easy it can be to have a garden that looks like it should be featured in a national magazine. If you stick to some basic principles and are prepared to put in a few hours work, it can all come true for you. You can have a stunning garden that will be the envy of your neighbourhood. It doesn't matter whether you are planning for square foot gardening, or want to take an organic gardening approach, the gardening tips here will help you achieve your dream.

Here are the top tips to follow on your path to garden glory!

1. Know your zone. A visit to your local nursery will be your first vital step. Here you will learn about the climate and plant types that will grow best in your area. Ask questions about this and as you collect the information, write down everything you hear.

2. Develop a gardening plan. Using the information you have from above you can now start to plan the style of garden that you would like, and which will grow to perfection in your area. This means you will be setting a theme for your garden and you should be careful not to deviate from this at any stage.

3. Segment your garden. From the plan you have developed it will be easier for you to divide your garden into areas that will feature specific elements of your plan. For instance if you are choosing a tropical theme, you may wish to have a featured stand of Golden Palms along a fence line and then some ginger plants to feature in a corner.

4. Choose the combining elements. Some plants will feature in every area of your garden so as to hold the garden together in a continuous theme. For example if you choose and understory of ferns, you can plant these in every garden so that there is a consistency throughout your garden.

5. Prepare yourself. Here is where the work begins. It is vitally important to choose premium soil types to match your garden choice, and to plan for distribution of water if possible via an automated system. Your watering system can be incorporated into the development of each garden bed.

6. Prepare the garden. Before you start planting you should be thinking about a compost system where you can use kitchen scraps and other organic matter in a compost bin or heap that you can allow to develop into vital gardening fertiliser. It's free too!

7. Plant from back to front. It sounds like a simple thing but many people have made the mistake of planting the front row of the garden first. Plant from the back so you don't have to reach over the front row!

That's it!

Of course you will need to regularly fertilise your plants and make sure your automotive system is actually turned on but if you take these simple steps from the outset your garden will go from dream to reality in a matter of months.
